He aims to strengthen the university’s mission and collaborate with the community during these trying times. The Board of Directors believes his innovative leadership will be crucial for Wittenberg’s growth and stability.

Springfield, Ohio – Dr. Christian M. M. Brady has been appointed as the 16th president of Wittenberg University, succeeding Mike Frandsen, who has served in this role since July 1, 2017. Brady, currently the dean of the Lewis Honors College at the University of Kentucky, will officially take on his new responsibilities on June 1.

In his new position, Brady is expected to address significant financial hurdles facing the university. Wittenberg has recently incurred a budget deficit of $13.7 million for the fiscal year ending June 2023, rising sharply from a $5.7 million deficit in the previous year. The institution has also been identified as being in “financial distress” by the Higher Learning Commission, which has prompted plans to eliminate 75 jobs, including 30 faculty and 45 staff positions. Additionally, Wittenberg experienced a troubling 31% decline in enrollment from 2017 to 2022, with total undergraduate enrollment currently standing at 1,299 students.

Brady expressed his deep honor in joining the Wittenberg community and stressed that the university’s mission to nurture the whole person—intellectually, physically, and spiritually—is more relevant than ever. He aims to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community partners to strengthen the university’s foundations and expand its impact.

William Edwards, chair of the Board of Directors, highlighted Brady’s innovative leadership style, which is deemed essential for navigating the complexities of today’s educational landscape. Brady’s extensive experience includes serving as dean of the Schreyer Honors College at Penn State University, and as interim dean of the College of Arts & Sciences at the University of Kentucky. This past experience is expected to benefit Wittenberg as it seeks stability and growth.

Brady holds a bachelor’s degree in history and near eastern studies from Cornell University, a master’s degree in biblical and theological studies from Wheaton College, and a doctorate in ancient Hebrew and Jewish literature from the University of Oxford. His academic journey began at Tulane University, where he held various roles including assistant professor and director of the interdisciplinary Jewish Studies program.

The decision to appoint Brady followed a comprehensive six-month presidential search process, which included input from a Presidential Search Committee composed of faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community members. This committee was tasked with finding a successor capable of leading the university during financially challenging times.

Wittenberg University, founded in 1845 with the primary goal of training Lutheran ministers, has undergone significant changes and evolved its curriculum over the years. Despite the financial struggles and enrollment declines, current students have voiced their confidence in the institution’s future and the sense of community they have found at Wittenberg.

The appointment of Dr. Brady marks a pivotal moment in Wittenberg’s history, as the university aims to navigate its challenges and embarks on a new chapter with renewed leadership. As Wittenberg looks ahead, it hopes to leverage Brady’s vision and experience to enhance its position and effectiveness in higher education.
