News Summary

A fatal motorcycle crash in Lexington County resulted in the death of David Eric Jones, 43, who lost control of his Harley-Davidson and crashed into trees. Investigations are ongoing as the area sees a rise in traffic fatalities, prompting concerns about road safety and helmet use among motorcyclists.

Lexington County, South Carolina – A tragic motorcycle crash occurred late Saturday night, resulting in the death of 43-year-old David Eric Jones of Chapin. The South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) is investigating this fatal incident, which took place around 10:30 PM on Long Pine Road near John Kinard Circle.

According to preliminary reports, Jones was operating a 2002 Harley-Davidson motorcycle when he lost control, veering off the left side of the road into an embankment and crashing into several trees. Unfortunately, David Eric Jones was found dead at the scene and was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. The cause of the motorcycle’s veering off the roadway remains unclear, and both the coroner’s office and the Highway Patrol are conducting investigations.

This incident adds to the troubling statistics regarding fatalities on South Carolina roads. As of April 13, 2025, the state has witnessed at least 187 deaths on its roadways, with a total of 948 fatalities reported in the previous year. In Lexington County alone, there have been at least seven traffic-related fatalities in 2025, a sharp comparison to the 50 deaths recorded in the entirety of 2024.

In addition to this motorcycle crash, another incident involving a motorcycle rider occurred on the same night. This incident happened when a pickup truck that had just entered Versailles Road was struck by a motorcycle riding eastward. The rider from this incident was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, but specific details regarding this person have not yet been released.

The ongoing rise in traffic accidents raises concerns among community members. The Lexington Police Department is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding these incidents to understand better the factors contributing to the increase in fatalities this year.

Motorcycle safety is particularly emphasized in light of these recent events. With many riders not using helmets, there is an ongoing push from safety advocates for more stringent helmet laws and better awareness campaigns about the importance of protective gear while riding. The tragic results of these recent crashes highlight the need for continued community focus on road safety.

As investigations proceed, updates will be released as more information becomes available. The Lexington community mourns the loss of life on its roads and remains hopeful for improvements in safety measures to prevent future tragedies.
