Lexington, Kentucky – Former Lexington Councilman David Kloiber has officially declared his candidacy for Kentucky’s 6th Congressional District, becoming the second Democratic candidate to enter the race. Kloiber aims to “bring common sense back to the Commonwealth,” emphasizing critical issues such as affordable housing, healthcare, job creation, and quality public education.

In his campaign, Kloiber stresses the importance of addressing the core issues that impact the everyday lives of residents. He believes that by focusing on these priorities, he can forge a path to better community well-being. Kloiber’s commitment to local concerns is evident as he plans to engage with district residents over the summer, gathering insights and experiences to refine his campaign strategy.

Kloiber, who served on the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council from 2020 to 2022, represented District 6 and is well-acquainted with local governance. He is a Lexington native and completed his education at Lexington Catholic High School and the University of Kentucky. In 2022, he made an unsuccessful bid for mayor of Lexington, garnering 29% of the vote against incumbent Linda Gorton. During that campaign, Kloiber notably funded much of his effort, contributing $630,000 from his own resources, including family loans, and raised a grand total of $644,055, significantly higher than Gorton’s $152,860.

Previously, Kloiber’s mayoral run centered around important topics like workforce development, job training facilities, and improvements to local schools. His dedication to education is also reflected in his work with the Kloiber Foundation, which provides technology resources for students and teachers in Fayette County Public Schools. Furthermore, he holds a leadership position in an investment management firm engaged in various economic development initiatives.

During his campaign launch, Kloiber expressed his motivation to create more opportunities for future generations, asserting the necessity of active engagement with the community to address their concerns. The Democrat’s entry comes at a time when interest in the 6th District is growing, shifting from a previously deemed “safe Republican” area to one now rated “likely Republican,” according to various nonpartisan predictors.

The incumbent Republican, Andy Barr, has held the congressional seat since 2013, consistently winning elections by large margins. In the upcoming Democratic primary set for May 19, 2026, Kloiber will compete against former State Representative Cherlynn Stevenson, while Ryan Dotson, a Republican State Representative, is also in the race. Kloiber aims to distinguish himself from Barr by concentrating on the common issues that affect voters, underscoring the significance of local political engagement.

Kloiber’s campaign launch took place at Elite Printing, where he articulated his commitment to enhancing community quality and implementing actionable policies. With his background in local government and economic development, Kloiber believes he can effectively address the concerns of Kentucky’s 6th Congressional District and rally support for his initiatives.
