Fayette County School Projects Budget Adjustments Announced

The proposed cost for a new Fayette elementary school has risen significantly from $44.9 million to $50.5 million. In contrast, the budget for the new Henry Clay High School has decreased from $185.6 million to $178.3 million. These adjustments are part of ongoing plans to accommodate the growing student population in Fayette County, which currently has 41,397 students enrolled.

The new elementary school will be located on Greendale Road and is set to begin construction in spring 2025, with an expected completion date in spring 2027. Once completed, this school will serve 750 students in grades K-5. The project aims to address the increasing demand for elementary education amid rising housing developments in the area.

The revised plans for Henry Clay High School involve its construction on the same property as the existing high school on Fontaine Road. The new facility will accommodate approximately 2,300 students in grades 9-12, providing necessary space to relieve overcrowding in existing high schools. Lafayette High School, currently operating at 113% capacity, is expected to undergo renovations or potentially require new construction to handle its capacity issues.

Future Construction Plans

The district has identified 9,377 new housing units planned in Fayette County over the next five years, which are projected to generate an estimated 2,749 K-12 students. To prepare for this influx, the Fayette County Board of Education’s Local Planning Committee is prioritizing future school projects, which include new constructions and major renovations at existing schools.

In addition to the new elementary school and high school, the district is considering several other projects. These include a new preschool center for 90 children, a new middle school in the Masterson Station area, and significant renovations at various existing schools. Educational facilities will not be the only focus; there are also plans for enhancing the athletic facilities at middle schools and expanding the road near the new elementary school to manage the expected increase in traffic.

Community Input and Involvement

To ensure that community voices are heard, a forum for public input regarding the District Facility Plan is scheduled. This event will provide community members with the opportunity to comment on the proposed school construction and renovation projects, helping the school board understand local needs and priorities better.

Building new institutions and improving existing ones is crucial for Fayette County as it navigates the challenges of accommodating a growing student population. By investing in the necessary infrastructure, the Fayette County Public Schools aims to maintain quality educational experiences for its current and future students.
