Branden Brown struggled on the mound and suffered the loss, while the Wildcats extended their season record to 9-1. Despite a brief comeback with an RBI from Tyler Castrataro, Hofstra failed to maintain momentum. The team now looks to regroup ahead of their next game against Marist University on March 4.
In what turned out to be a challenging Sunday afternoon, the Hofstra University baseball team faced off against the No. 23 ranked University of Kentucky and unfortunately suffered a 9-1 defeat. This loss marked Hofstra’s second series sweep of the season, dropping their overall record to 3-7, while the Wildcats improved to an impressive 9-1 with their victory.
The game kicked off with Branden Brown on the mound for Hofstra. Sadly, Brown couldn’t find his rhythm and faced a series of challenges. Over the course of just 2.7 innings, he gave up three earned runs on two hits. Struggling to maintain control, he issued two walks and hit a surprising five batters—a tough day at the office for any pitcher. Brown did manage to register two strikeouts, bringing his season total to seven across three appearances.
In the first inning, it was clear the Wildcats were hungry for a win. Brown allowed back-to-back base hits to opponents Luke Lawrence and Shaun Montoya. A sacrifice lineout by Cole Hage advanced the runners to second and third base, setting the stage for Tyler Bell, who grounded out to second base, allowing Lawrence to score the opener of the game.
Despite the rough start, Hofstra’s spirit wasn’t completely extinguished. In the bottom of the third inning, they found a way to get on the board. Michael Brown led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Dylan Palmer. Tyler Castrataro stepped up and doubled to left field, successfully driving in Michael Brown for Hofstra’s only run of the game, earning Castrataro his sixth RBI of the season. The score was tied 1-1, but the comeback was short-lived.
Brown returned for the fourth inning, but the difficulties continued. In a critical moment with the bases loaded, he hit Dylan Koontz, allowing yet another run to score. Tanner Sanderoff stepped in to relieve Brown, but he too faced challenges, walking Devin Burkes, which resulted in a second run for Kentucky.
It was then time for freshman Brayden Gregg to take the mound, but he had a rough debut. Unfortunately for Hofstra, he surrendered a grand slam to Ethan Hindle, extending Kentucky’s lead to a daunting 7-1. In a silver lining, Gregg managed to pitch 2.3 scoreless innings after this, hoping to give Hofstra a fighting chance.
As the game rolled into the later innings, Kentucky showed no signs of slowing down. In the seventh inning, the Wildcats executed a clever double steal that allowed pinch runner Kyuss Gargett to score. They weren’t done yet; Gargett chipped in later with a single that brought James McCoy home in the eighth inning.
Ultimately, Branden Brown was credited with the loss for Hofstra, while Kentucky’s Scott Rouse celebrated his first win of the season after dominating for five scoreless innings. It’s clear that Hofstra has some work to do, but with their next game against Marist University scheduled for Tuesday, March 4, at 3 p.m., they will be looking to bounce back strong.
As a reminder, this contest was Hofstra’s first four home games played at Farmingdale State Baseball Stadium, setting the stage for a hopeful turnaround as the season progresses. Fans are eager to see how the team responds after this setback, and there’s always next time to rally for a win!
