Madison County, KY – A tragic multi-vehicle accident on I-75 claimed the life of a 16-year-old boy on July 20, 2025. The incident occurred near exit 83 around 5:30 p.m., amidst congested traffic conditions that contributed to the disaster.
The series of collisions began when an international commercial motor vehicle (CMV) driven by David Turner rear-ended a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado operated by Rico Brown, a resident of Berea. The force of the impact sent the CMV crashing into a guardrail before it collided with a 2024 Ford F-350, which was being driven by Steven Wohlscheid and towing a recreational vehicle. This chain reaction caused the Silverado to collide with the rear of a 2021 Freightliner CMV operated by Justin Hill.
As a result of the crash, Rico Brown sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to the University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital for treatment. However, a juvenile passenger in the Silverado, identified as 16-year-old Tristan Brown, was pronounced dead at the scene, marking a devastating loss for the Berea community.
The Kentucky State Police (KSP) are leading the investigation into the crash, working to determine the factors that led to this tragic event. Following the accident, significant traffic delays were reported on I-75, and drivers were urged to find alternative routes while the scene was being cleared. The northbound lanes of I-75 were initially closed to facilitate the investigation and cleanup but have since reopened.
This fatal accident is not the only incident reported on I-75 that day. Earlier, around 3 p.m., another traffic alert was issued for a crash involving a tractor-trailer that struck a guardrail and spilled fuel near exit 108. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from this incident, and emergency services, including PECCO for cleanup efforts, arrived promptly to mitigate the situation. The cause of this separate crash, along with the fatal multi-vehicle collision, remains under investigation.
The recent accidents have intensified concerns surrounding traffic safety and congestion on I-75, a major route utilized by thousands of commuters and travelers daily. Authorities are urging drivers to remain vigilant and cautious, especially in areas experiencing heavy traffic.
The loss of life in such incidents raises critical discussions about road safety measures and the importance of adhering to safe driving practices. As investigations continue, the community mourns the loss of young Tristan Brown and reflects on the impact of these tragic events.
Authorities encourage anyone who may have witnessed either of the incidents to come forward as they seek to piece together the events leading up to the crashes. Updates on the investigations will be made available as more information comes to light.
