Preeti Gupta, an organizer, emphasizes the importance of unity through diverse expressions. The event is free but requires registration, and will be part of a month-long exhibit showcasing traditional items at the Lexington History Museum.

Lexington, a city known for its rich heritage, will host an International Fashion Show and Dance Event on May 17 as part of its recognition of Diversity Month. Scheduled from 4-6 p.m. at the Lexington History Museum, this event aims to showcase the vibrant cultures that contribute to the city’s identity while aligning with its 250-year anniversary celebrations.

The event will feature cultural presentations of fashion and dance from various nations, including Japan, Mexico, India, Kenya, and Ukraine. Each performance aims to educate attendees about the unique customs and artistic expressions of these countries, enhancing cultural appreciation among the community.

Preeti Gupta, an organizer and member of the 250Lex Commission, highlights the event’s mission to foster cultural exchange and community bonding through music and dance. Having relocated to Lexington from India 33 years ago, Gupta has made it her mission to give back to the community that has welcomed her. The upcoming fashion event is a personal initiative to promote unity and understanding amid the growing diversity of the city.

The international fashion show is part of a month-long exhibit at the Lexington History Museum, displaying traditional items from the featured countries. The exhibit includes various cultural artifacts such as hand-embroidered outfits, dolls, books, and other significant items. Among these contributions, Gupta has loaned her wedding gown and several other personal artifacts, providing an intimate glimpse into her heritage.

Lexington has a historic background of immigration dating back to the 1800s, with early settlers including French, Scottish, and Irish communities. This diverse tapestry continues to grow, with the introduction of numerous cultural groups over the decades. Notably, the prevalence of Swahili as the third-most spoken language in Lexington, with around 8,000 speakers primarily due to refugee resettlement programs from Kenya, exemplifies the city’s expanding diversity.

As the global landscape experiences numerous challenges, Gupta emphasizes the importance of celebrating unity through diverse cultural expressions. This sentiment is reflected in the goals of the International Fashion Show and Dance event, aimed at promoting inclusivity and understanding across different communities.

The event is free of charge, although registration is required for attendance. Community members interested in participating or learning more can visit 250Lex.com or reach out via email at 250LexKy@gmail.com.

This celebration of diversity during May is not only a showcase of cultural pride but also a testament to Lexington’s long-standing tradition of welcoming and embracing various cultural backgrounds. By participating in this event, residents will have the opportunity to enjoy an afternoon of colorful performances, gain insights into foreign cultures, and engage with members of Lexington’s diverse communities.
