Lexington, Kentucky – In a significant achievement for healthcare in the Bluegrass State, three Kentucky hospitals have been recognized in Newsweek’s list of America’s Best Cancer Care Hospitals. The University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital is the top-ranked facility from Kentucky, earning the 43rd spot on the national list. Following closely, Baptist Health Lexington is ranked 145th, and St. Elizabeth Edgewood Hospital holds the 165th position, in a comprehensive evaluation that included 200 hospitals across the country.

The University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center, affiliated with UK Chandler Hospital, has particularly distinguished itself in its treatment for lung and breast cancers. Since 2013, Markey has been designated as a National Cancer Institute cancer center, one of only 57 in the United States to hold the prestigious Comprehensive Cancer Center designation. This status provides patients with access to exclusive treatment options and clinical trials that are critical for advancing cancer care.

Newsweek collaborated with Statista to compile the rankings by evaluating hospitals based on key performance indicators in patient care, which assess staff expertise, patient satisfaction, and the effectiveness of treatments provided.

Contextually, the fight against cancer remains a pressing concern in the United States, with over 2 million people projected to receive a cancer diagnosis this year as reported by the American Cancer Society. Fortunately, the overall cancer death rate in the U.S. has seen a decline, averaging a decrease of approximately 1.7% annually from 2013 to 2022. This trend highlights the significance of innovative care and access to cutting-edge clinical trials, a focus area for institutions like the Norton Cancer Institute.

The Norton Cancer Institute has pioneered cancer clinical trials directly in the community, with an emphasis on new treatments. Clinical trials are crucial for testing the safety and efficacy of new therapies, typically categorized into four phases before they become widely accessible to patients. Norton specializes in early-stage clinical trials, especially Phase 1 studies, which explore advanced treatments including immunotherapy. Notably, in 2024, the institute made history by conducting a first-in-human clinical trial for a novel treatment targeting advanced solid tumors.

Further bolstering cancer care accessibility in Kentucky, the UofL Health Brown Cancer Center South is currently under construction in Bullitt County. This $25 million center aims to deliver specialized cancer services to approximately 15,000 patients and will substantially reduce travel times for rural residents seeking care. The facility will provide various essential services, including infusion therapies, labs, and cancer research and educational opportunities, and is projected to create around 25 job positions upon opening, scheduled for the second half of 2026.

In conjunction with the ongoing enhancements to cancer care infrastructure, the University of Kentucky is also planning the construction of a new Cancer and Advanced Ambulatory Building, set for completion in 2027. This new facility aims to consolidate various oncology clinics and associated support services under one roof, allowing for enhanced patient care and resource management. Among the advancements, the UK Markey Cancer Center will expand its outpatient services, focusing on bone marrow transplants and precision medicine.

Additionally, the Georgetown Community Hospital has expanded its Central Kentucky Cancer Care infusion center, boosting its capacity by nearly 60%. The renovated center will feature eight infusion bays and two private rooms designed to foster a supportive atmosphere for patients undergoing treatment, further emphasizing the commitment to improving cancer care options in the region.

These developments underscore Kentucky’s ongoing efforts to enhance cancer care facilities and treatment services, reflecting a broader commitment to support patients and families impacted by cancer across the state.
