Boxes of Dum-Dum lollipops ready for delivery

News Summary

A Kentucky mother, Holly LaFavers, experienced an extraordinary event when her son unintentionally ordered nearly 70,000 Dum-Dum lollipops, resulting in a $4,200 charge from Amazon. Despite struggling with accidental deliveries, the family turned the situation around by donating the excess lollipops to local organizations after receiving a full refund from Amazon. This incident highlights the importance of monitoring online purchases, especially when children have access to devices.

Lexington, Kentucky – In an unusual incident, a Kentucky mother, Holly LaFavers, discovered nearly two dozen cases of Dum-Dum lollipops delivered to her home on May 4, 2024. The unexpected delivery was a result of her 8-year-old son, Liam, accidentally placing an order for 30 cases, which amounts to approximately 70,000 lollipops, while using her phone.

LaFavers was alerted to the situation by her son’s enthusiastic announcement, leading to a quick check of her account. She was shocked to find a $4,200 charge from Amazon that had put her account into the negative. This situation was exacerbated by the fact that when the delivery driver arrived, they did not knock or ring the doorbell, preventing the mother from rejecting the delivery upon arrival.

After the initial delivery, LaFavers had a brief opportunity to stop a second delivery. However, she only managed to successfully reject eight more boxes as the deliveries continued to arrive. Faced with the financial burden and a mountain of lollipops, she turned to social media in search of local buyers for the unexpected surplus.

The situation garnered media attention after a local news organization contacted LaFavers. The coverage led to Amazon reaching out to resolve the issue, and thankfully, they refunded the full amount of $4,200 to LaFavers. The refund provided much-needed relief to the family, allowing LaFavers to regain her financial footing.

In a generous turn, the LaFavers decided to donate the excess lollipops to community members and local organizations, including their church, Immanuel Baptist Church, fostering goodwill within their neighborhood.

Liam, who has fetal alcohol spectrum disorder and was adopted by LaFavers, has challenges in understanding the consequences of his actions, such as making an online order unintentionally. LaFavers expressed the importance of fostering awareness about fetal alcohol spectrum disorder and its impact on children, emphasizing the need for support in managing its effects.

In light of this incident, LaFavers plans to adjust the settings on her phone to prevent similar accidental orders from occurring in the future, ensuring that her account remains secure from such mishaps. Amazon representative Austin Stowe confirmed that the company worked closely with LaFavers to bring about a positive resolution to the order issue.

This unique incident serves as a reminder of the ease of online shopping and the importance of monitoring account activities, especially when young children have access to devices. Families are encouraged to take precautions to avoid unintended purchases.
