The Weather Prediction Center has issued a Level 2 out of 4 “Slight Risk” warning for flash flooding, forecasting locally heavy rainfall, especially in the Bluegrass and south-central areas, which may lead to rapidly rising creeks, streams, and issues on low-lying roads.

On Thursday, Kentucky will experience a mild day, with temperatures hovering in the mid-70s throughout central and eastern parts of the state. Spotty showers are expected mainly south of Lexington, particularly near Lake Cumberland, though the bulk of the day will remain dry.

Come Friday morning, widespread rain coupled with scattered thunderstorms will impact the morning commute as the low-pressure system moves through the area. The system is projected to bring heavy downpours, with gusty winds and isolated strong storms particularly affecting southeastern Kentucky. As the front passes, expect afternoon temperatures to dip to the mid to upper 60s.

While Friday poses challenges due to severe weather, the weekend forecast indicates an easing up of conditions. Pleasant temperatures are expected in the low to mid-70s, accompanied by lower humidity and a mix of sun and clouds. Outdoor events, such as the Railbird Music Festival at Red Mile, will benefit from mostly dry conditions on both Saturday and Sunday, although stray afternoon showers may still develop over higher terrain.

Looking ahead into early next week, temperatures are forecasted to rise again, potentially hitting near 80 degrees on Monday. By Tuesday and Wednesday, temperatures may climb further, reaching the low to mid-80s. However, there is a possibility of showers midweek as moisture levels increase in the atmosphere. Additionally, indications from weather models suggest another system may approach the region late next week.

Residents are advised to stay informed about weather updates, especially concerning the risk of flash flooding. Caution is encouraged when traveling, particularly on roads prone to flooding or near creeks and streams.
