Lexington is preparing for a special homecoming performance by Broadway star Laura Bell Bundy on May 7, 2025. The event, titled “Mama, I’m a Big Girl Now,” will commemorate the 20th anniversary of the musical “Hairspray,” featuring original cast members and backup singers from The Lexington Theatre Company. This promises an evening filled with nostalgia and celebration of both Bundy’s career and her connections to the Lexington community.
The performance will take place at the Lexington Opera House and is expected to showcase iconic songs from “Hairspray” along with personal reflections on the performers’ career journeys and friendships fostered along the way. The event aligns with the Lex Theatre Company‘s celebration of its 10th anniversary, highlighting the importance of community in the arts.
Laura Bell Bundy was born on April 10, 1981, in Euclid, Ohio, but she moved to Lexington as a child. Her mother, Lorna Bundy-Jones, recognized her talents early, enrolling her in children’s pageants where Bundy earned notable recognition, including winning a car at age 5. Bundy’s early exposure to performance led her to experience the media spotlight when she appeared on “The Phil Donahue Show,” passionately defending pageant participants.
At the age of 9, Bundy made her stage debut at the renowned Radio City Music Hall, marking the beginning of a promising career. In 1991, she moved to New York City to pursue her passion for theater while attending the Professional Children’s School and performing in “Ruthless.” This determined pursuit laid the groundwork for her future success. After graduating from Lexington Catholic High School, Bundy returned to New York, where she starred as Amber in “Hairspray” and pursued higher education in sociology at NYU.
Bundy achieved significant acclaim with her performance as Elle Woods in “Legally Blonde: The Musical,” earning a Tony nomination. Her talent extended beyond theater, with over 100 television episodes to her credit, prominently featuring roles in popular series such as “How I Met Your Mother” and “Hart of Dixie.” Additionally, she has made a mark in the music industry, releasing her debut country album, “Longing for a Place Already Gone,” in 2007. Her second album, “Achin’ and Shakin’,” reached No. 5 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart, showcasing her versatility in performance.
In addition to her entertainment career, Bundy has made significant contributions through her philanthropic endeavors. She founded her production company, LBBTV, which features a successful sketch comedy web series. Moreover, she has focused on empowering women through a charitable organization and her podcast, “Women of Tomorrow,” which discusses women’s rights issues. Her personal life saw a new chapter in 2017 when she married Thom Hinkle, a TBS executive, and welcomed their son in May 2019.
As Bundy gears up for her anticipated performance in Lexington, fans and community members alike are eagerly awaiting the chance to witness her talent and celebrate her journey. The event not only highlights her achievements but also cements her role as a key figure in the theater world and an inspiration for aspiring artists. Anticipation builds as the Lexington community prepares to welcome back one of its own for a night of music, memories, and celebration.
