Sponsor Our ArticlesLexington is set to welcome a brand new adventure playground at Gatton Park, funded by a $2 million donation from the Triangle Foundation. This state-of-the-art playground will feature attractions for children of all ages and abilities, including the thrilling Gristmill Tower with a 27-foot slide. The project aims to enhance the community space, promoting family engagement and outdoor activities. Construction is expected to begin soon, with the playground slated to open in late summer or early fall of 2025, alongside a variety of other park amenities.
Lexington is buzzing with excitement as plans are underway for a fantastic new adventure playground at Gatton Park, a beautiful privately funded park in the heart of downtown. This project is made possible thanks to a generous donation of $2 million from the Triangle Foundation, ensuring that the playground will hold the name of its benefactor for all to enjoy.
For those who may not yet be familiar, Gatton Park has made significant strides toward completion, raising over $55 million for its development over the last decade. The new playground will be a highlight of the park, featuring various attractions that promise to engage and delight children and families alike. This exciting project is set to occupy a space of approximately one-third of an acre and will be fully ADA-accessible, ensuring that children of all abilities can join in the fun.
One of the most exciting features of the playground will be the Gristmill Tower. Kids can look forward to zooming down a thrilling 27-foot slide, as well as conquering multiple climbing features that challenge their skills. Sponsorship for this landmark feature is provided generously by Misdee and James Miller, showing just how much the community values this project.
But that’s not all! The new playground will also include a family picnic area, log jams for adventurous play, spinning light posts to enchant the little ones, a fun four-prong slide, and a safe toddler play area for the littlest explorers. Clearly, this playground is designed to cater to children of all ages, making it a go-to spot for fun.
Gatton Park, located behind the Central Bank Center’s Rupp Arena and nestled between High Street and Main Street, is projected to officially open its doors to the public in late summer or early fall of 2025. Originally known as Town Branch Park, the transformation of this land, once a mere parking lot, into a vibrant green space has been in the works for quite some time.
The Triangle Foundation, renowned for its pivotal role in developing Triangle Park back in the 1980s, will help support not just the park’s immediate playground needs but also its long-term sustainability initiatives. After all, maintaining such a splendid space for decades is essential, and since it isn’t eligible for the new park tax designated for city-run public parks, securing annual sustainability funds is crucial. The park will operate under a private non-profit model, similar to other large parks across the nation.
In addition to the adventure playground, Gatton Park aims to feature a variety of amenities like a performance amphitheater, a dog park, a spacious great lawn, and even connections to regional hiking and biking trails. This park is designed to be a community hub, with something for everyone!
Furthermore, a wonderful aspect of the park is its commitment to modern connectivity. The broadband provider Kinetic is making waves by promising free public Wi-Fi throughout the park as part of a multi-year investment in the community. This means that families can enjoy outdoor activities while staying connected.
The heart of Gatton Park lies in its emphasis on community support and engagement. It’s a reminder that the success of such projects relies not just on grand donations and architectural plans but also on the love and participation of the people in the area. Community members are urged to join forces with the park managers to maintain this fantastic new facility and to engage in the programming that will surely come as the park evolves.
With so much work ahead, construction on the various park features, including the playground, is set to commence shortly. The community’s future looks bright with this exciting addition to the Lexington landscape, and everyone is eagerly counting down the days until they can slide, climb, and explore all that the new adventure playground has to offer!
