Lexington – Four individuals were hospitalized, including one with life-threatening injuries, following a two-vehicle crash that occurred around 4 p.m. on Friday on Man o’ War Boulevard at Rio Dosa. The inner loop of Man o’ War Boulevard remains closed as emergency crews work on the scene.
According to authorities, one driver involved in the collision sustained severe injuries that could potentially be life-threatening. The second driver and two passengers in the other vehicle managed to escape with non-life-threatening injuries. Paramedics quickly transported all four individuals to nearby hospitals for treatment. The Collision Reconstruction Unit of the police department is actively investigating the cause of the accident.
This crash is one of two serious traffic incidents reported over the weekend in Lexington. In an unrelated event, 17-year-old Matthew Perrine, a baseball player from Frederick Douglass High School, lost his life in a head-on collision on Saturday afternoon. The accident occurred around 3 p.m. on the 3500 block of Bryan Station Road. Perrine died approximately two hours after the crash at a hospital, according to the Fayette County Coroner’s Office.
Perrine was known as a student at Frederick Douglass High School and a member of the junior varsity baseball team. He was also an alum of Eastern Little League and had played for three different teams throughout his youth. In the crash involving Perrine, all seven occupants of the two vehicles were taken to the hospital. In addition to Perrine, one individual sustained life-threatening injuries, one had non-life-threatening injuries, and four others experienced very minor injuries.
In the wake of Perrine’s tragic death, his teammates and friends are coming together to support his family through a GoFundMe campaign. The initiative aims to assist Perrine’s family as well as another individual described as his friend who was also affected by the crash. As of noon on Monday, the GoFundMe has raised nearly $14,000, attracting over 200 donations from the community.
The Frederick Douglass Baseball Program has expressed its deep condolences and emphasized that Perrine will be greatly missed. In a gesture of solidarity, other local high school baseball teams, including Tates Creek and Paul Laurence Dunbar, have shown support for Perrine’s family through prayers and encouragement to donate to the GoFundMe campaign.
In a tribute to Perrine, the Frederick Douglass baseball team plans to hold a celebration of life event on Sunday. Meanwhile, the team is scheduled to face off against Henry Clay on Tuesday. The league and community have rallied to support each other during this difficult time.
As investigations into both incidents continue, the Lexington police department is urging drivers to exercise caution while on the roads, as traffic-related incidents have seen an uptick in recent weeks.
