Lexington: Driver Suffers Life-Threatening Injuries in Tree Crash

A person is in critical condition following a car accident on Keeneland Boulevard late Sunday night. The vehicle crashed into a tree near the intersection with Versailles Road. Emergency responders arrived on the scene to find a single vehicle had left the roadway and struck a tree, resulting in significant injuries to the driver.

The injured individual was promptly transported to a local hospital for treatment. The cause of the crash is currently under investigation by law enforcement officials.

Other Accidents in Lexington

In a separate incident, a collision occurred at the intersection of Madrone Way and Harrodsburg Road involving a garbage truck and an SUV on Wednesday morning at approximately 7:12 a.m. Authorities reported that the SUV was found overturned at the crash site. The driver of the SUV had to be extracted from the vehicle and was taken to the hospital; their injuries were confirmed to be non-life-threatening.

The garbage truck involved does not belong to the city of Lexington, and its driver sustained no reported injuries. In the wake of the crash, outbound Harrodsburg Road has been reduced to one lane as crews work to clear the scene. No specific timeline has been provided for when the roadway will be fully reopened. Motorists are advised to consider Military Pike and Old Higbee Road as alternate routes during this time.

Fatal Crash on Interstate 20

Additionally, Lexington County experienced a fatal accident on Friday that resulted in the death of a 26-year-old man from South Carolina, identified as Tyrese Antwan Thomas. The crash took place around 2 a.m. when Thomas was driving a 2011 Volkswagen sedan westward in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 20. He unfortunately collided head-on with a 2007 Freightliner tractor trailer.

Emergency services transported both drivers to the hospital. Tragically, Thomas was pronounced dead due to his injuries, while the tractor trailer driver survived and is reported to have sustained non-life-threatening injuries. It has been confirmed that Thomas was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash; however, it remains unclear if the tractor trailer driver was also restrained. An ongoing investigation is focused on determining why Thomas was traveling in the wrong lanes.

Context on Safety Trends

This series of incidents underscores ongoing concerns about road safety in the region. As of May 4, statistics indicated that 270 people had lost their lives on South Carolina roads in 2025, with at least 13 of those fatalities occurring in Lexington County alone. This highlights the urgent need for enhanced road safety measures and awareness in the area.

Authorities continue to investigate the causes of these accidents and have advised drivers to remain vigilant and obey all traffic regulations to prevent future incidents.
