Lexington, Kentucky – A child was struck by a vehicle in Lexington on Saturday evening in the 900 block of Marcellus Drive around 6:15 p.m. The child, whose age hasn’t been disclosed, is reported to be under the age of 12 and was taken to the hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening.

The incident took a troubling turn when the driver of the vehicle fled the scene immediately after hitting the child. Sierra Smith, a passenger in the vehicle at the time, has since been arrested in connection with the accident. While the investigation continues, it remains unclear who was driving at the time of the incident, as the driver exited the car and ran away on foot. Following the accident, Smith allegedly drove away from the scene as well.

Sierra Smith is facing multiple charges including Leaving the Scene of an Accident/Failure to Render Aid/Assist with Death or Serious Physical Injury, Tampering with Physical Evidence, Possession of Controlled Substance 1st Degree (Methamphetamine), and Possession of Marijuana. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with the Lexington Police actively working to locate the driver who fled on foot.

Adjacent to this incident, a separate report noted that a three-year-old boy was also struck by a vehicle on Trout Court around 11:45 a.m. on the same day. This child suffered life-threatening injuries and is receiving medical attention. A neighbor, identified as Gwen Brown, provided immediate assistance by performing CPR on the injured child until first responders arrived.

Local residents have been expressing concerns about speeding and safety in their neighborhoods, leading to an increased focus on traffic concerns in the area. However, the Lexington Police have not confirmed how the child on Trout Court was struck, nor whether speed played a role in that incident.

In response to these incidents, the Collision Reconstruction Unit and Forensic Services Unit are actively investigating both cases to gather more information and ensure accountability. The community remains on alert, urging for better safety measures to prevent such troubling incidents from recurring.

As the investigation unfolds, the importance of traffic safety in residential areas has come under the spotlight, prompting discussions among residents and local authorities. The tragic nature of these incidents emphasizes the necessity for vigilance when it comes to protecting the most vulnerable pedestrians, particularly children.
