Lexington – A Lexington man was arrested on drug-related charges after authorities discovered over 35 pounds of suspected methamphetamine in two packages. The arrest of 34-year-old Demetria Hurd took place on July 30, following an investigation by Narcotics Enforcement Detectives, who were examining suspicious packages that had recently arrived in the city.

The investigation was bolstered by assistance from the Lexington Police Department’s Real-Time Intelligence Center and the Kentucky State Police. Hurd faces several serious charges, including two counts of endangering the welfare of a minor, first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance (methamphetamine) first offense, and possession of marijuana.

Authorities have requested that anyone with additional information regarding Hurd’s case contact the Lexington Police Department at 859-258-3600. Individuals wishing to remain anonymous can submit tips to Bluegrass Crime Stoppers at 859-253-2020 or online.

This incident is part of a broader crackdown on drug trafficking in the area. On June 25, a separate investigation linked to an anonymous tip led police to a home on Saron Drive, where over 75 grams of illegal drugs were seized. These included 13.2 grams of fentanyl, 14.7 grams of crack cocaine, 35.5 grams of Xanax, 11.6 grams of marijuana, and 2.2 grams of methamphetamine. Two individuals, Ronyell Downs, 38, and Cacie Mikayla Turk, 40, were arrested in connection with this earlier investigation. Downs is also facing an additional charge for failure to appear in court and is currently held at the Fayette County Detention Center on a $6,000 bond.

In a wider scope, Operation Summer Heat 2.0, a coordinated effort by the Kentucky State Police targeted suspected drug networks across the state, led to the arrest of 197 people and the filing of 490 charges. This operation resulted in the seizure of large quantities of various illegal drugs, including over 3,000 grams of fentanyl, 1,176 grams of cocaine, and over 6,000 grams of methamphetamine, valued at more than $640,000. The operation spanned all 16 Kentucky State Police posts and registered significant arrests in locations including Elizabethtown and Pikeville.

Officials have emphasized the importance of these efforts to ensure the safety and health of Kentuckians. The recent arrests, including Hurd’s, are part of a larger strategy to combat the ongoing issue of drug trafficking and substance abuse in the state.

As the investigations continue, citizens are encouraged to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities, contributing to the collective effort to tackle drug-related issues in Lexington and beyond.
