The Lexington Reggae Fest is transforming into a five-day celebration, featuring various performers and events across Lexington, including a special day at Red River Gorge. This expansion reflects the demand for reggae music events in Kentucky and includes artists like Mighty Mystic and Jamaican musicians. The festival aims to provide enriching experiences, including authentic Jamaican cuisine. The City of Lexington has recognized this cultural event by designating the week as Lexington Reggae Week.

Lexington, KY – The Lexington Reggae Fest is set to expand this year into a comprehensive five-day celebration, running from July 23 to July 27. This iteration includes multiple events and performances in various locations across Lexington and a special day at the scenic Red River Gorge.

The festival originally began as a single-day event organized by the Tahlsound Concert Series in 2023. The recent expansion reflects a growing desire to develop a more extensive annual event, catering to bands traveling from across the United States and ensuring a broader scope for attendees.

Among the diverse lineup of performers, Mighty Mystic from Somerville, Massachusetts, and Jamaican artists such as LawGiver The Kingson, Ashley Irae, and Imar Shephard will take the stage. Last year was a pivotal moment for the festival as it marked the first instance of a band flying in from outside the state to perform, indicating a notable milestone for the event’s organizers.

This year’s festival aims to provide enriching experiences for the participating bands. The kickoff will occur in collaboration with Red Barn Radio on July 23, followed by a street party on July 24. The celebration will continue with a collaborative event with the Lexington Art League at Loudoun House on July 25, culminating in an outing at Hop’s in the Red River Gorge on July 26. The event concludes with a traditional gathering on July 27 at the Oleika Temple Great Lawn along Southland Drive.

The expansion of the festival aims to fill the void of the Kentucky Reggae Festival, which was last held in Louisville in 2019. There is a recognized demand for reggae music events within Kentucky, extending beyond major urban areas like Lexington and Louisville, indicating strong community interest.

Additionally, the Louisville-based collective Deep Nourished Roots (DNR) will support both Irae and Shephard as their backing band throughout the week. Other musical guests featured in the lineup include Louisville’s PMA and local Lexington hip-hop artists Tony Wavy and Elz Bentley. The inclusion of hip-hop artists aims to merge different music styles and provide a broadened and more inclusive festival experience.

Festival attendees can also look forward to authentic Jamaican cuisine prepared by local restaurant Irie Flavors, featuring popular dishes such as fried plantains, oxtail, and jerk chicken. This adds a cultural culinary experience to the music-filled festivities.

The City of Lexington has acknowledged the festival’s significance by proclaiming this week as Lexington Reggae Week, underlining the cultural impact of reggae music in the local community. With a promising schedule and a variety of performances, the Lexington Reggae Fest looks set to celebrate the vibrancy and unity brought together through reggae music.
