News Summary

Lexington, Kentucky, welcomes Sierra Trading Post to the Hamburg shopping area, offering outdoor gear at discounts. Skechers and Fresh Market are next on the retail expansion list, promising to revitalize the area. Despite recent property value declines, local developers remain optimistic about retail growth.

Lexington, Kentucky is set to see a surge in retail activity, bolstered by the recent opening of Sierra Trading Post, a discount outdoor gear retailer, in the Hamburg shopping area. This new store, part of the TJ Maxx retailing company, opened its doors at the end of May and aims to provide consumers with outdoor and active lifestyle products at prices at least 20% lower than those of competing stores.

Located on Sir Barton Way, the Sierra Trading Post establishment marks the retailer’s third location in the state, joining its existing stores in Florence and Paducah. Previously, the site was occupied by a Bed Bath & Beyond location, which closed as part of the chain’s bankruptcy proceedings in 2023. The new store features a diverse inventory of well-known brands, including Carhartt, Free People, prAna, Reebok, and Eddie Bauer. Shoppers can expect an ever-changing selection, which the property’s owner and developer likened to a “treasure hunt.”

In addition to Sierra Trading Post, several new developments are in the pipeline for the Hamburg area. Skechers has announced plans to open its first standalone store in Lexington next to Sierra Trading Post by the end of 2025. The retailer is expanding its presence in Kentucky, where it already operates a store in the Outlet Shoppes of the Bluegrass in Simpsonville. The addition of Skechers aims to enhance the retail options available to local consumers.

Moreover, a Fresh Market, a specialty grocery chain known for its high-quality products, is slated to take over the space next to Skechers, which was formerly occupied by Buy Buy Baby. The Fresh Market store will be larger than its counterpart located in Lansdowne Shoppes and will showcase a new store prototype along with a variety of gourmet products. This grocery store is expected to open in the first quarter of 2026.

The Hamburg Shopping Center has experienced a notable transition, particularly following the closures resulting from Bed Bath & Beyond’s bankruptcy. The retail landscape is changing, with a former Frisch’s Big Boy restaurant potentially transforming into a medical marijuana dispensary. Plans for this 5,500-square-foot facility, which would include a drive-thru, could come to fruition by mid-November, contingent upon city approval.

In terms of property values, the recent sale of the Hamburg Pavilion marked a significant decline. The property was sold for $135 million, a notable decrease from its previous sale price of $185.7 million in 2014. Fairbourne Properties, based in Chicago, purchased the Hamburg Pavilion from HAP Investment. Fayette County Property Valuation Administrator noted that the retail market’s shift towards online shopping has contributed to this decrease in value.

Despite these challenges, local developers maintain a positive outlook for the retail market in Lexington. In contrast to the vacancies seen at Hamburg, there are no vacancies throughout the rest of the Hamburg area, as ongoing deals continue to attract new tenants to the region. The Hamburg Pavilion currently accommodates 73 retailers, featuring popular brands such as Marshalls, Ulta, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and Best Buy.

In conclusion, the Hamburg shopping area in Lexington is gearing up for a revitalization with the opening of Sierra Trading Post, the anticipated arrivals of Skechers and Fresh Market, and a significant shift in the overall retail landscape following recent developments. The area’s ongoing appeal is underscored by the lack of vacancies in neighboring locations, indicating strong consumer interest and investment potential in the region’s retail offerings.
