The incidents have prompted investigations by local authorities and elicited strong community support. This past weekend, two tragic road collisions in Lexington resulted in the loss of two young individuals, prompting investigations by local authorities and an outpouring of community support.
The Fayette County Coroner’s Office has confirmed that Liczi Lopez, a 22-year-old resident of Richmond, was killed in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 75. The accident occurred around 5:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 1, 2025, near the 110-mile marker. Lopez was pronounced dead at the scene after suffering multiple blunt force injuries, with the coroner classifying her death as accidental.
The specific cause of the crash has yet to be determined, leaving investigators seeking answers regarding the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate event.
In a separate incident, Matthew Perrine, a 17-year-old student at Frederick Douglass High School, died from injuries sustained in a head-on collision on Saturday, April 26, 2025. The collision took place around 3 p.m. on the 3500 block of Bryan Station Road.
Perrine was taken to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries two hours after the accident. The collision involved a passenger car and a pickup truck, resulting in all seven occupants being transported to medical facilities for treatment.
Among those injured in the accident, one occupant suffered life-threatening injuries, while another sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The other four individuals involved in the crash were reported to have very minor injuries.
A GoFundMe page has been created to provide support for Perrine’s family as well as the family of another victim involved in the collision, raising nearly $14,000 by Monday. In the wake of this tragedy, the baseball team at Frederick Douglass High School, of which Perrine was a member, is organizing a celebration of life for him, scheduled for May 4. Support has poured in from other high school baseball teams across Lexington to assist the Frederick Douglass program during this difficult time.
The local police department’s Collision Reconstruction Unit is actively investigating both accidents to determine the causes that led to these incidents. Officials emphasize the importance of understanding the factors that contributed to these tragic events as they continue their inquiries.
Road safety remains a significant public concern, particularly in areas with heavy traffic. Authorities frequently urge drivers to remain vigilant and practice safe driving habits to prevent accidents. In response to the recent collisions, local advocates emphasize the need for community awareness about the risks associated with reckless or distracted driving.
These tragic incidents serve as a somber reminder of the fragility of life and underscore the importance of road safety for all motorists. The impact on families and friends can be profound, highlighting the need for community support during such heart-wrenching times.
