Lexington, Kentucky – A man was seriously injured in a shooting that occurred on Monday evening in the 1200 block of Ascot Park, Lexington. The incident took place around 6:35 p.m. and involved a male victim who has since been transported to a local hospital for medical treatment following the serious injuries he sustained.
Lexington Police were alerted to the situation and discovered the victim at the scene. As of now, authorities are conducting an investigation and have encouraged anyone with information about the shooting to reach out to them at (859) 258-3600. Additionally, tips can be provided anonymously through Bluegrass Crime Stoppers.
This shooting in Lexington comes just days after a separate incident involving two juveniles. On August 20, an 18-year-old man was arrested in connection with that shooting, which left a 15-year-old and a 16-year-old injured. Both juveniles received medical treatment at the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital after they were shot during the same incident, which occurred in the area of Chestnut Ridge Drive.
The juveniles were found at different locations following the shooting. The 16-year-old was interviewed at the hospital, but initially provided limited information about the events leading to the gunfire. However, six days later, additional evidence led to a more thorough questioning of the 16-year-old, who subsequently identified the 15-year-old and two 18-year-old suspects as responsible for the attack.
One of the 18-year-old suspects, identified as Jaycion Higgins, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with first-degree assault. He is currently in custody at the Fayette County Detention Center, with a bond set at $50,000. Authorities are still searching for the second suspect, Anazjae Patton, also 18 years old, who has an active warrant issued for first-degree assault. Furthermore, a warrant has also been issued for the 15-year-old juvenile for charges including first-degree assault and possession of a handgun by a minor.
Reports indicate that the suspects surrounded the 16-year-old in response to a group text. During the encounter, the 15-year-old shot the 16-year-old in the stomach. Following the shooting, Higgins and Patton allegedly fired at the victims as they attempted to escape.
Detectives investigating the case reviewed neighborhood surveillance footage which corroborated the account given by the 16-year-old about the incident. Additionally, two tips received through Bluegrass Crime Stoppers identified Higgins, Patton, and the 15-year-old as suspects in the case. A cellphone found at the crime scene, believed to be owned by Patton, contained a message from Higgins sent shortly before the shooting, instructing to “shoot the thriller.”
Higgins is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in Fayette District Court on the upcoming Tuesday.
