Lexington, KY – A Lexington man, Daquis Sharp, 26, has been indicted in federal court in connection with a shooting that injured a police detective. Sharp is charged with possession of a firearm that has traveled in interstate or foreign commerce, a federal offense stemming from the February 28 incident.

In addition to the federal charge, Sharp is facing several serious state charges, including attempted murder of a police officer, second-degree assault (police officer), first-degree criminal mischief, and six counts of first-degree wanton endangerment. Two other men involved in the incident, Jatiece Parks, 19, and Zalan Dulin, 19, are facing the same state charges as Sharp.

Sharp is currently being held at the Fayette County Detention Center. He has a bond set at $1 million for the attempted murder charge and $100,000 for a separate assault charge related to a previous incident from the summer of 2022. A preliminary hearing for Sharp is scheduled for March 11 in Fayette District Court.

The shooting incident occurred shortly before midnight on February 28, in the 900 block of Royal Avenue, where detectives were conducting an investigation. The suspects reportedly opened fire on a detective who was inside a vehicle, injuring him in the thigh; however, he did not require hospitalization. Fortunately, the detective was able to return fire, and no other injuries were reported during this violent episode.

During the investigation, detectives had been surveilling Sharp, Parks, and Dulin as they exited a residence and moved toward E. 7th Street. After losing sight of them, detectives heard multiple gunshots and noticed muzzle flashes from the most recent location of the suspects. It was later confirmed that the detective’s vehicle sustained damage from approximately 30 gunshots, with detectables accounting for around 43 shell casings located at the scene. The cost of damages to the vehicle is estimated to exceed $1,000.

The two additional suspects, Parks and Dulin, were arrested alongside Sharp after police established a perimeter around their residence. In the home, investigators discovered five handguns that were manufactured outside of Kentucky, reinforcing the federal charge against Sharp concerning interstate firearm possession. Witnesses indicated that the suspects were seen carrying bags into the residence prior to the shooting and that the firearms did not belong to them. Surveillance footage has also confirmed Sharp entering the home post-incident with a firearm.

In a related matter, Lexington Police are investigating another shooting incident where six suspects are being sought in connection with a shooting that injured a juvenile near Elm Street and Charles Avenue. A teenage victim was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries resulting from this shooting that took place around 4 p.m. Residents in the area are urged to check their surveillance footage and provide any pertinent information regarding the incident. A separate shooting on Kearney Ridge Boulevard also resulted in serious but non-life-threatening injuries to a victim. Police are encouraging anyone with information regarding the weekend shootings to come forward or to submit anonymous tips.
