News Summary

Drivers in downtown Lexington should prepare for lane closures and traffic delays as resurfacing work is set to begin on Main Street. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet announced that milling and paving will occur nightly between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m., impacting traffic flow. Additionally, a roadway rehabilitation project on I-75 in Madison County will continue until October 2025, causing further disruptions. To address increasing congestion along Richmond Road, new traffic configurations will be implemented, significantly improving safety measures.

Lexington – Drivers in downtown Lexington should brace for lane closures and noticeable traffic delays as the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has announced upcoming resurfacing work. The project will involve milling and paving along Main Street from Midland Avenue to Newtown Pike, commencing on Sunday, July 20, 2025.

The resurfacing effort is set to occur nightly from Sunday to Thursday, between the hours of 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. Residents and travelers are urged to take precautions and allow additional travel time as these disruptions are expected to affect normal traffic flow.

In addition to the work being conducted on Main Street, there is a separate roadway rehabilitation project taking place in Madison County. This project, which involves I-75, is anticipated to extend until October 2025. It will be in effect from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays, with short lane closures expected on southbound I-75 and shoulder closures on the northbound side at Exits 87 and 90. These closures are necessary for the replacement of a barrier wall.

Traffic congestion in the Richmond Road and Athens Boonesboro Road corridor is becoming increasingly pronounced due to the development of new residential neighborhoods, retail stores, and schools in the area. In response to this growth, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans to reconfigure several intersections along Richmond Road. The reconfiguration will include the implementation of R-CUT (Restricted Crossing U-Turn) designs aimed at improving traffic movement and reducing severe accidents.

Specific intersections will be modified to limit left turns and encourage U-turns at designated points. The estimated cost for this extensive project is $12.75 million, which is funded through a combination of federal and state programs. Construction for these modifications is projected to begin in spring 2026 and is expected to be completed by the summer of the same year.

Historical data relating to collisions along Richmond Road has revealed a concerning number of accidents, which has prompted the need for enhanced safety measures. R-CUT designs have proven effective in reducing the total number of crashes by up to 40% and serious crashes by more than 50%. In addition to the traffic improvements, the project will also include the construction of a shared-use path designed for bikers and walkers to access Jacobson Park, stretching from Yorkshire Boulevard to Hays Boulevard.

Utility relocation efforts necessary for the Richmond Road enhancements will begin in early 2025. Moreover, the Transportation Cabinet will be keeping a close eye on traffic volumes and safety trends in close proximity to Brenda Cowan Elementary School to determine any future requirements for traffic signals.

Drivers in the affected areas are encouraged to stay informed regarding all ongoing and future construction projects to ensure safety and minimize delays during their commutes.
