Families enjoying a sunny day at an aquatic center in Lexington, focusing on water safety.

News Summary

As summer heats up, families in Lexington are flocking to local pools, emphasizing water safety and sun protection. With over 2,000 visitors at the Southland Aquatic Center already, parents are prioritizing swim lessons for children and promoting sun safety. Goldfish Swim School plays a key role in teaching young kids water safety skills. Local pools are also enhancing their amenities and capacities, encouraging community engagement in aquatic activities while ensuring safety education remains a top priority.

Lexington is seeing a surge in summer activity as families flock to local aquatic centers to enjoy the warmer weather and prioritize water safety. Over 2,000 visitors attended the Southland Aquatic Center during the first weekend of summer, marking a significant increase in participation as schools release students for summer vacation. With the onset of summer after a particularly cold winter, families are taking advantage of the opportunity to engage in safe outdoor hobbies, particularly those related to water activities.

Parents in the community have underscored the importance of sun safety for children, particularly by promoting the use of sunscreen to protect children’s delicate skin from harmful UV rays. The sentiment of maximizing enjoyment during the beautiful summer days is echoed by many families as they spend quality time together by the pools. Additionally, parents are focusing on water safety education for their children to mitigate the risks associated with swimming. Drowning statistics reveal that three children die from drowning every day in the United States, making it the leading cause of death for children ages one to four. These alarming figures have led to a heightened emphasis on safety for families engaging in water activities.

Goldfish Swim School in Lexington plays a pivotal role in promoting water safety and swimming skills among young children. The school begins offering swim lessons to infants as young as four months and, according to educational standards, most children are ready for swimming lessons by age four. These lessons include essential safety training focused on handling emergency situations, such as falling into a pool and knowing what to do in those instances. Parents are repeatedly encouraged to keep supervision at the forefront of swimming activities and to ensure there are individuals nearby who are trained in CPR.

Local instructors stress the significance of children identifying the location of lifeguards and nearest exits in a pool setting. This education is crucial for establishing a safety-first culture during aquatic activities. With many families installing home pools, interest in swim lessons has increased, reflecting parents’ commitment to the dual benefits of safety and skill development. The recent lifting of capacity restrictions for public pools, the first since 2019, has further spurred families’ desire to visit local aquatic facilities.

The city-owned pools cater to a diverse range of visitors and needs. Individual passes are available for $55, while families of up to six residents can purchase family passes for $270. Operating hours for the pools are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. from Monday to Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. on Sundays. Various amenities, including slides, diving boards, and children’s pools, provide fun and engaging experiences for visitors of all ages.

The Castlewood Aquatic Center features an enclosed splash pad, with admission prices set at $4 for children and $6 for adults. The Woodland Aquatic Center provides a separate diving pool and a lap pool, charging $3 for children and $5 for adults. At the Southland Aquatic Center, a newly installed diving board complements the existing toddler pool and concessions. Tates Creek Aquatic Center is also making improvements, including repairs on its water features while maintaining its offerings of toddler pools and large lap pools.

Neighborhood pools across Lexington are hosting swim teams and classes for an additional fee, with youth and adult admission prices varying between $3 and $5. Additionally, four spraygrounds within the city provide supervised play areas designed for children to enjoy without the dangers associated with standing water.

As part of their commitment to promoting water safety, Goldfish Swim School will offer free swim lessons on June 26 and presents new enrollees with two complimentary initial lessons. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to make swimming lessons and safety education more accessible to families in the Lexington community.
