Sponsor Our ArticlesLexington welcomes a unique theatrical experience this weekend with a fresh production of The Lion in Winter, presented by On the Verge. This innovative theater troupe transforms everyday locations into captivating performance spaces, providing an immersive experience for just 30 audience members. Set in the repurposed Luigart Studios, the show invites attendees to engage with the unfolding drama as they explore contemporary themes woven into the historical narrative. With a talented cast and a distinctive setting, this production promises to blend history and modernity for an unforgettable evening.
Lexington is bursting with creativity and, this weekend, it’s home to a fresh production of the classic play The Lion in Winter. The show, brought to life by the innovative theater group On the Verge, promises locals not just a show, but an experience like no other.
On the Verge is not your average theater troupe. Founded by Ave Lawyer, this group focuses on transforming everyday locations into captivating theaters rather than sticking with traditional stages. Since its debut in 2008, On the Verge has lit up various fascinating venues like historic homes, a boutique, and even a funeral home, ensuring that every performance feels unique and engaging.
This weekend’s show marks the troupe’s second production since the world began to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, a clear sign of the arts’ resilience and re-emergence. The performance will take place at Luigart Studios, located near North Limestone and East Loudon Avenue. This location is particularly special as it has been repurposed from a former hemp warehouse into an eclectic space featuring multiple sets, including bedrooms, a grand living room, and even a dungeon!
The Lion in Winter explores the tumultuous family dynamics and succession struggles of the English throne during the 12th century. This isn’t your run-of-the-mill historical play, though. In a twist that blends the past with the present, contemporary elements such as video game showdowns and cringey selfies weave into the narrative, making the story feel relevant to today’s audience.
Audience members can expect an active role in the experience. With performances capped at around 30 attendees, the intimacy of the setting allows them to move through the space as scenes unfold around them. This unique approach means viewers won’t just be passive watchers but rather engaged participants in the drama!
The cast features actors who bring their characters to life in a way that’s riveting and relatable. Kevin Hardesty takes on the role of King Henry II, emphasizing the close-knit atmosphere that comes from performing in such proximity to the audience. This setup enriches the interaction and involvement during the entire performance.
Missy Johnston, who portrays Eleanor of Aquitaine, draws intriguing parallels between this enthralling historical drama and the modern series Succession. The plot navigates the explosive conflicts between King Henry II and his estranged wife, Eleanor, as they wrestle with the decision of selecting an heir from their three sons during the Christmas season. The themes of power, loyalty, and family dynamics couldn’t be more relevant, making it a compelling watch for all.
This iconic play has historical significance that extends beyond the stage. Originally adapted into a film in 1968, the movie won three Academy Awards, including Best Actress for the legendary Katherine Hepburn. Johnston mentions the challenge of her performance: seeking a distinct interpretation distinct from Hepburn’s iconic portrayal.
Hardesty admires the language of the script, which he likens to the boldness of Shakespeare with a modern twist that keeps it accessible to today’s audience.
Performances of The Lion in Winter will run from January 23 to February 3 at Luigart Studios, located at 110 Luigart Court, Lexington. Tickets can be purchased from the On the Verge website. Don’t miss your chance to be part of this unique production that promises to transport you back in time while keeping it refreshingly relevant!
Get ready for an unforgettable evening filled with history, drama, and perhaps a selfie or two!
