Sterling MicroBrew has launched its new taproom and pizza restaurant, Black-Type Brewing, in Lexington. Located near the University of Kentucky, the venue features 16 craft beers on tap and a diverse menu of wood-fired pizzas. Owned by veterans of the horse industry, the establishment celebrates local heritage while offering discounts for students and a pet-friendly environment. The grand opening is set for May 17, promising to be a vibrant addition to the local dining scene.

Lexington – Sterling MicroBrew has officially launched its expansion into Lexington with the opening of its new taproom and pizza restaurant, Black-Type Brewing, which is located at 373 Virginia Ave. This new establishment is set to serve both craft beers and wood-fired pizzas to the vibrant community, especially catering to those near the University of Kentucky campus.

Black-Type Brewing features 16 craft beers on tap, including an initial offering of eight beers that are brewed on-site. Plans are underway to double the in-house brewed beers to a total of 16 by summer. The diverse selection currently includes a range of IPAs, stouts, sours, ciders, and ales, reflecting the growing craft beer scene in Kentucky. Until the local brewing capacity increases, the establishment will rotate in beers from other local breweries such as Blue Stallion, Country Boy, Ethereal, Mirror Twin, and Wise Bird.

The owners of Black-Type Brewing, Robert Fedyna and Alberta Davies, both veterans of the horse industry, have teamed up with equine veterinarian Victor J. Torres for this venture. The name of the brewery, “Black-Type Brewing,” is a nod to a prestigious designation used in horse racing pedigrees, tying the business back to the owners’ roots.

Guests can enjoy a pint of beer for an average price of around $7, with growler jugs priced at four times this amount. The menu at Black-Type Brewing also features eight handcrafted pizzas, which can be made with traditional dough or a cauliflower crust option. These pizzas are prepared in a wood-fired oven, using fresh dough made on-site, and fresh basil grown at the location. Pizza sizes range from 10 inches to 14 inches, with popular options including the Meat Lover’s Mediterranean, Green Goddess, Margherita, and Garden Harvest Delight.

Complementing the main menu are appetizers such as garlic knots, spinach and artichoke dip, and a Bavarian pretzel served with award-winning beer cheese. The taproom is designed to be pet-friendly and offers a 10% discount to University of Kentucky students as a special incentive for the local population.

In addition to the main taproom, Black-Type Brewing includes an upstairs wine bar, which serves as a private room available for events. This feature is an added draw for patrons looking to host gatherings in a unique space. Operating hours for Black-Type Brewing are daily from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., providing ample opportunity for visitors to explore the offerings.

The grand opening celebration is scheduled for May 17, a date that the owners anticipate will attract a significant local crowd eager to sample the newest addition to the Lexington dining and drinking landscape. Black-Type Brewing also offers carryout, to-go orders, and catering services, making their menu accessible to a wider audience. Interested customers can contact the brewery directly at 859-456-3081 for more information or to place orders.

This expansion marks a significant milestone for Sterling MicroBrew and aims to enrich the Lexington community’s food and beverage scene while paying homage to its equine heritage.
