Grand Mesa, Colorado – Noah Tinch, a teenager from Lexington, Kentucky, tragically died while fishing one day before his 19th birthday. The incident occurred at Sunset Lakes in Grand Mesa, where Tinch was discovered unresponsive in less than three feet of water on Thursday afternoon. His mother, Angie Tinch, was present at the scene and attempted to revive him through CPR until paramedics arrived. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead shortly afterwards by emergency responders, according to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office.
Tinch was born in Lone Tree, Colorado, and had lived in Lexington since 2012. He was a rising sophomore at the University of Kentucky, pursuing a degree in kinesiology, and had made a mark as a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. Colleagues and friends remembered him as a kind and impactful individual. In his honor, the national Beta Theta Pi organization is coordinating a “Beta Burial Ceremony” as part of a celebration of life scheduled for Saturday, June 21, at the Harris Ballroom of the UK Gatton Student Center. As a tribute, flags at the fraternity’s administrative office in Oxford, Ohio have been lowered to half-staff.
During his high school years, Tinch was recognized as an all-city honorable mention soccer player, a member of the boys’ soccer team at Henry Clay High School, and also played for Lexington Sporting Club and the Cincinnati United Premier Development Academy. His passion for soccer extended to his volunteering efforts; he contributed to the Special Olympics, where his mother serves as CEO. Just prior to his passing, Tinch participated in a soccer tournament for the organization.
Tinch is survived by his parents, Angie, CEO of Special Olympics Kentucky, and Brett Tinch, a senior mortgage consultant for Prosperity Home Mortgage. Friends and family are deeply affected by the loss, as Principal Tony Blackman addressed the school community to provide support during this difficult time.
In light of the tragedy, a fundraiser known as the “Noah Tinch Legacy Fund” has been created to continue Tinch’s commitment towards helping children attend soccer camps. The initiative aims to establish a scholarship for future Henry Clay soccer players. Since its launch, the fundraiser has successfully raised over $32,000, moving towards its goal of $35,000. Donations are being encouraged to support the Tinch family during this challenging period.
Following an autopsy, findings revealed that Tinch suffered a head injury and drowned after attempting to retrieve a fishing fly that had become tangled, leading him to fall into the water. This tragic event has left the Lexington community and those close to Tinch in mourning, highlighting both the fragility of life and the impact Tinch had on those around him.
