News Summary

Shawn Pryor, a local author and computer support specialist, is making waves in the literary world by engaging with young creatives through workshops and his published works. With over 60 books to his name, including children’s graphic novels, Pryor emphasizes the importance of creativity and storytelling. His commitment to nurturing talent in students at Winburn Middle School highlights the growing demand for literary engagement in the youth community, while he continues to battle against the rising trend of book bans.

Lexington, Kentucky – Local author Shawn Pryor is making a significant impact on young creatives through his extensive literary work and hands-on school programs. Through his role as a computer support specialist at the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center and as a writer of over 60 books, including children’s graphic novels and comic books, Pryor is inspiring a new generation of storytellers and artists. His commitment to nurturing creativity in students is evident as he continues to engage with them on various levels.

Pryor’s journey into the world of writing began in his childhood. He grew up in a family that had limited finances, which led to regular Saturday visits to the library. This exposure not only fueled his love for reading but also introduced him to a variety of genres, including graphic novels, science fiction, and fantasy. One of the pivotal moments in Pryor’s youth was discovering “The Dark Knight Returns”, a comic that prompted him to recognize comics as legitimate literature. This realization was further deepened by an “Iron Man” comic featuring James Rhodes, which resonated with him as it showcased a superhero he could identify with.

After spending 11 years developing his skills in the comic book industry, Pryor’s talent caught the attention of Capstone, a children’s book publisher, leading him to transition into creating children’s literature. His passion for storytelling extends beyond the page; he conducts workshops with students at Winburn Middle School every other Saturday, where he teaches the fundamentals of comics, sequential art, and character creation. For the past four years, these sessions have been a meaningful endeavor for him, allowing students to engage in world-building and crafting their own stories.

Pryor’s mission is to expose students to the diverse paths available after high school or college, highlighting the integral role creativity plays in various fields. He emphasizes that writing is foundational not only in literature but across entertainment mediums, including video games, music, and film. During his workshops, he instructs students on three important steps in writing: generating an idea, creating an outline, and transitioning to the writing phase.

The impact of Pryor’s work is reflected in the engagement levels of his students. One memorable interaction involved a student who, despite needing a translator, expressed excitement about his writing aspirations. Such moments bring him joy as he strives to cultivate a passion for creative expression among the youth. Nonetheless, Pryor observes with concern the rising trend of book bans that could hinder young readers and writers and questions how it might affect the future of school visits.

As of mid-March 2023, Pryor has conducted around 15 school visits, with a growing number of institutions reaching out to him. This increasing demand underscores the importance of his role in the literary community and his commitment to encouraging young writers. He aims to instill a sense of hope and resilience in his students, stressing that failure is often a stepping stone to success.

In addition to his engagement with youths, Pryor is in the process of working on his first young adult novel, expanding his repertoire and continuing his journey as a writer. Through his literature and outreach efforts, Shawn Pryor is nurturing the aspirations of future authors, guiding them to pursue their creative dreams and leave their mark on the literary landscape.
