News Summary

Lexington is seeing a disturbing rise in pedestrian accidents, prompting local authorities to urge drivers to be more cautious. Recent incidents have resulted in serious injuries and even fatalities, including the tragic deaths of two pedestrians earlier this month. The city is now prioritizing road safety and encouraging community members to remain vigilant. Investigations continue as officials seek to implement effective measures to prevent further incidents.

Lexington is witnessing a troubling rise in pedestrian accidents, resulting in both injuries and fatalities over the past few weeks. Multiple incidents have raised concerns about road safety for pedestrians in the area, prompting local authorities to urge drivers to exercise caution.

On Friday morning at approximately 3:45 a.m., a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle on Centre Parkway near Gainesway Park. The pedestrian sustained minor injuries and was soon transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Fortunately, no criminal charges are expected to be filed against the driver involved in this incident, and the roadway has since been reopened.

This recent case follows another serious incident on February 15, when two pedestrians were critically injured after being hit by a vehicle on Man o’ War Boulevard, near Tates Creek Road, at around 7 a.m. Both victims were transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. In the aftermath of this crash, the roadway remained closed as officials conducted an investigation into the incident.

Sadly, the Fayette County Coroner’s Office later confirmed that both victims from the February 15 crash—Matthew Hudson, 55, and Eyad Albaree, 61—succumbed to their injuries. Autopsies revealed that both individuals died from multiple blunt force trauma, and their deaths have been ruled as accidents.

In another tragic occurrence, a 64-year-old pedestrian named Woodrow Flinchum was killed on April 2 after being struck by a vehicle on Winchester Road around 12:30 a.m. Flinchum suffered injuries classified similarly as multiple blunt force trauma and was pronounced dead shortly after at 1:14 a.m. Like the previous incidents, the driver involved in Flinchum’s incident was unharmed and remained at the scene. Investigators have indicated that they do not expect to file criminal charges relating to this accident either.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit of the Lexington Police Department is currently investigating Flinchum’s accident, although the roadway has already been reopened for normal traffic flow. This consistency in outcomes regarding lack of charges for drivers involved in pedestrian accidents may raise questions about the safety measures in place within Lexington.

Lexington City officials have expressed their commitment to improving road safety for pedestrians. They are encouraging drivers to be vigilant and respectful of pedestrian rights, especially at crosswalks and during residential hours when more pedestrians may be present. Local community members are also being urged to take extra precaution when navigating streets, particularly at night or in adverse weather conditions where visibility may be reduced.

The rising number of pedestrian accidents has alarmed residents and brought to light the pressing need for improved traffic safety measures. Pedestrians and drivers alike are reminded of the essential role each plays in ensuring road safety. Experts suggest that further outreach efforts, community awareness campaigns, and potentially redesigning certain roadways could help mitigate future incidents.

As Lexington encounters these challenges, the city is making strides to address the issue and reinforce the message that pedestrian safety is a top priority. Continuing investigations aim to understand the causes behind these tragic events better and develop effective solutions to enhance safety for all who travel these roads.
