Lexington, Kentucky – The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department (LFCHD) is investigating a Salmonella outbreak linked to desserts from Ramsey’s Diner and Missy’s Pies, with 10 confirmed cases reported so far. The outbreak was first identified on June 27, 2025, and has affected residents across multiple counties.
The cases include:
- Four residents from Fayette County
- Two residents from Jessamine County
- Two residents from Mercer County
- One resident from Fleming County
- One individual from out of state
All infected individuals consumed either a custard-based pie topped with meringue or a cheesecake dessert from either Ramsey’s Diner or Missy’s Pies. Health officials stated that the consumption of these desserts occurred at different locations of the two eateries between June 17 and June 20, 2025. A total of four Ramsey’s Diner locations and one Missy’s Pies location are implicated in the outbreak.
In light of the outbreak, LFCHD is advising anyone who purchased a pie from either establishment to discard any leftovers immediately. The symptoms of a Salmonella infection can manifest within 6 to 48 hours post-exposure and may include:
- Diarrhea
- Fever
- Abdominal cramps
- Pain
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Chills
- Headache
- Blood in stool
While symptoms typically resolve in a few days, they can sometimes last longer than a week. Health officials urge individuals experiencing persistent symptoms to seek medical assistance.
Individuals who have shown signs of illness after consuming food or pies from Ramsey’s Diner or Missy’s Pies since June 15, 2025, are encouraged to complete a questionnaire aimed at addressing the outbreak.
LFCHD has partnered with both restaurants to discard potentially contaminated pies and has collected samples of pies and eggs for testing by the state public health lab. Following sanitation protocols, Ramsey’s Diner and Missy’s Pies have resumed operations but are currently limiting their menu to shelf-stable fruit pies and products that do not include eggs as ingredients.
As of now, the source of the Salmonella infection has not been definitively identified, but there is a possibility that contaminated eggs may be involved. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides additional information regarding egg safety and handling to prevent future outbreaks.
LFCHD continues to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as new information becomes available. Health officials remind the public to remain vigilant and cautious when consuming food items, particularly those that contain eggs or dairy products.
