News Summary

A series of school bus accidents have taken place in Kentucky and South Carolina, resulting in multiple injuries and a confirmed death. A collision in Lexington involved no injuries, while a more severe crash in Chester County resulted in critical conditions for some and one fatality. Local authorities are investigating the incidents, underscoring the importance of road safety for school transportation.

Lexington, Kentucky – A series of school bus accidents across Kentucky and South Carolina have resulted in injuries, but fortunately, there have been no fatalities reported in the Lexington collision. In Chester County, however, a more serious incident occurred, involving multiple injuries and one confirmed death.

On Monday morning, around 6 a.m., a bus collided with a car on Alexandria in Lexington. There were no students aboard the bus at the time of the crash, and no injuries were reported from this collision.

Contrastingly, a more severe incident took place in Chester County, South Carolina, on Thursday involving a school bus carrying students. This crash, which occurred on Interstate 77 around 1:47 p.m., involved three buses returning from a field trip. A tire failure on one of the buses caused it to veer off the road, hit a guardrail, and subsequently overturn. While specific details regarding the injuries are still being gathered, multiple individuals have been reported in critical condition, alongside one confirmed fatality.

The bus at the center of this accident was transporting three adults and approximately 35 students. Two other buses that were part of the group did not participate in the crash. After the incident, some students were taken to local hospitals for further evaluation due to concerns for their health.

Local authorities and educational leaders have expressed their condolences. South Carolina State Superintendent of Education and state officials emphasized their support for families affected by the Chester County crash. Parents and students affected by the incident regrouped at a reunification center located behind a Shell gas station in Blackstock.

Prior to the Chester County crash, an accident occurred in Rockcastle County, Kentucky, where a school bus collided with a pickup truck. This collision also involved students, who were promptly evaluated by medical staff. In this case, injuries were described as minor, including scrapes and bruises. A total of 23 students were transported to the hospital for evaluation and treatment, but most were discharged by 7 p.m. The bus monitor from this incident was treated at the scene and subsequently taken to Rockcastle Regional Hospital for further care, while the drivers of both vehicles involved were evaluated medically in private vehicles.

In summary, while the Lexington incident remained devoid of injuries, the Chester County crash raised significant concern with multiple injuries and a tragic death acknowledged. Investigations are underway, with the South Carolina Highway Patrol tasked with determining the details surrounding the Chester County accident. The situation serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety for school transportation and the challenges faced when unexpected incidents occur.
