Speakeasy bar with bookshelves and wine selection

News Summary

Local entrepreneur Rebecca Burnworth has opened The Book Club, a speakeasy-style bar in Lexington’s Distillery District, offering a unique atmosphere blending literature and wine. Located behind a bookcase within District 7 Social, it aims to provide a sophisticated yet cozy escape from the main venue’s lively ambiance. With a diverse selection of low-intervention wines and a menu catering to all preferences, The Book Club’s launch is set to reshape wine culture and offer an inclusive drinking experience.

Lexington — In a unique blend of culture and leisure, local entrepreneur Rebecca Burnworth has launched a new speakeasy-style bar, the Book Club, in Lexington’s Distillery District. This hidden gem opened its doors during Valentine’s Day weekend and is set to offer patrons a sophisticated yet cozy experience that challenges the pretentiousness often associated with wine culture.

The Book Club is located inside District 7 Social, accessible through an inconspicuous corridor that leads back to the kitchen, with a bookcase serving as the entrance. This innovative bar is envisioned as a retreat from the lively atmosphere of the main establishment, providing a quieter alternative for guests looking to unwind.

The launch event featured a speaking engagement from Richmond-based author Wes Browne, whose novel “They All Fall The Same” was complemented by a selection of wines related to the book. This clever pairing underscores Burnworth’s goal of merging the love for literature with the enjoyment of wine.

Burnworth’s inspiration for the Book Club arose from a light-hearted observation about typical book clubs, which often prioritize wine over actual reading. Her vision for this establishment is to make wine more accessible and less intimidating, aiming to reshape the image that wine has a high barrier to entry.

The Book Club boasts an impressive selection of around 50 low-intervention wines sourced from small producers across various countries, including France, Croatia, and Spain. The pricing is designed to accommodate diverse budgets, with glasses ranging from $11 to $20, and bottles priced between $15 and $100, with some premium selections hitting up to $500.

In addition to the extensive wine menu, the Book Club offers small-batch canned wines and a rotating “Rebecca’s Picks” menu that highlights Burnworth’s personal favorites. The establishment also caters to a wider audience by serving a variety of drinks, such as bourbons, CBD creations, non-alcoholic beverages, and Italian sodas, ensuring that there is something for everyone.

The bar operates on Thursday from 4-10 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 4 p.m.-12 a.m., and Sunday from 4-9 p.m. Guests can also make appointments for visits on Monday through Wednesday, providing flexibility for those eager to experience the unique ambiance of this new destination.

Previously, the space occupied by Book Club served as an underutilized bakery and dessert area. Burnworth’s transformation of the venue was motivated by a desire for a quieter corner amidst the hustle and bustle of the adjacent duckpin bowling area. She successfully obtained the necessary state license for alcohol sales, paving the way for the establishment’s launch.

The Book Club’s atmosphere stands in contrast to the more energetic vibe of District 7 Social, making it an appealing option for those looking to enjoy a relaxing evening out. The commitment to an inclusive wine culture and diverse beverage options reflects Burnworth’s dedication to creating a welcoming environment free from gate-keeping regarding drink choices.

For those interested in discovering more about the Book Club or its offerings, the public can visit the bar’s Instagram page to stay informed about updates and events.
