News Summary

A Southern Middle School student attempted a dangerous trend known as the ‘Social Media Laptop Fire Challenge,’ leading to a school evacuation. The challenge involves short-circuiting the school-issued Chromebooks, posing fire risks. Principal Kevin Payne highlighted the importance of discussing such hazardous trends with children. The incident caused disruption, particularly for eighth-grade classes. Other districts in Kentucky have reported similar incidents, raising awareness about the dangers and potential legal consequences of participating in such activities, prompting officials to urge parents to talk openly about safety.

Lexington, Kentucky – A student at Southern Middle School attempted to imitate a dangerous trend known as the “Social Media Laptop Fire Challenge,” prompting the evacuation of the school on Thursday afternoon. This risky challenge involves deliberately shorting out school-issued Chromebooks by inserting conductive objects into the charging ports, with the potential to ignite fires.

According to reports, the incident occurred at approximately 1:01 p.m. School Principal Kevin Payne notified families about the situation through a letter, detailing how students and staff were evacuated as a precautionary measure. The Lexington Fire Department was alerted to assess the building’s safety.

After a thorough investigation, the fire department declared the premises safe, allowing students and staff to re-enter the building. However, the incident caused a significant disruption to classrooms, particularly affecting eighth-grade students and their teachers, who had to relocate temporarily.

Principal Payne characterized the act as a serious offense and emphasized the importance of discussing the hazardous nature of such challenges with children. He encouraged parents to reinforce the dangers associated with mimicking trends found on social media.

In light of this alarming event, a spokesperson for Fayette County Public Schools, Dia Davidson-Smith, confirmed that this was the only similar incident reported in the district at that time. However, other school districts in Kentucky have faced challenges related to this concerning trend. For instance, Perry County Schools reported that seven Chromebooks were damaged by students attempting the same challenge. The district noted the financial liability of damaging a Chromebook, which costs $435, and warned that law enforcement would be involved in cases of such damage.

Furthermore, South Marshall Middle School issued a statement emphasizing the risks associated with the TikTok trend that encourages students to insert foreign objects into their devices, which could result in battery overheating or fires. This rising trend has not only impacted Southern Middle School but also other nearby educational institutions.

Safety concerns have led to similar incidents resulting in evacuations in various schools across the region. For instance, Bryan Station Middle School reported an attempt to execute the challenge shortly after the Southern Middle School incident. Additionally, West Jessamine Middle School in Jessamine County had to evacuate due to smoke from a comparable act, serving as a stark reminder to families about the potential dangers inherent in such behaviors.

District leaders across multiple counties are wielding their authority to raise awareness about the risks associated with prevalent social media trends and the severe consequences of damaging school property. Local law enforcement agencies have issued warnings regarding potential legal ramifications for students caught participating in destructive activities like the fire challenge.

As this trend continues to pose risks in schools, officials urge parents to engage in open conversations with their children about the dangers linked to following such viral challenges. Active communication can help deter students from participating in hazardous activities and underscore the importance of safety and responsibility regarding school property.

The response to the Southern Middle School incident reflects a growing concern among educators and parents alike regarding the influence of social media on youth behavior. It also highlights the need for proactive measures to educate students about the inherent risks of attempting viral challenges that can lead to serious consequences.
