Lexington, KY – A series of serious traffic incidents this week has raised safety concerns in Lexington and Richmond, Kentucky. The Mercer County Sheriff’s Office reported that Lexington Road/US 68 east reopened on Wednesday morning after an earlier collision that had temporarily shut down the road. Motorists were advised to avoid the area as emergency personnel responded to the scene.
Meanwhile, Richmond Police are investigating a collision involving a police officer and another vehicle at the intersection of Lexington Road and the Robert R. Martin bypass. Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver of the second vehicle mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake, leading to a collision with the police cruiser. One individual from the second vehicle sustained minor injuries and was transported to the hospital. Fortunately, the officer and their K-9 partner were unharmed. A collision reconstruction unit responded to the scene, which is standard protocol for incidents involving city-owned vehicles.
Earlier this week on Monday, a tragic three-vehicle collision on New Circle Road in Lexington resulted in the deaths of three individuals. The accident, which occurred shortly after 12:30 p.m. between Liberty Road and Trade Center Drive, involved a U-Haul truck and a construction van. Reports indicate that the van caught fire following the collision. Emergency services declared all three occupants of the vehicles deceased at the scene; the victims were identified as William Kelly Curtin, 47, and Emma Hayden, 55, both from Lexington, and Oleksandr Tyshko, 48, from Nicholasville, who was driving the van. A third vehicle involved in the accident sustained minor damage.
This incident marked the first traffic-related event in Fayette County with three or more fatalities since June 2021. Following the crash, New Circle Road was closed in both directions between Winchester Road and Liberty Road for investigative purposes but was reopened by 3 p.m.
On the same day as the deadly collision, another major accident occurred on New Circle Road within a construction zone, sending four individuals to the hospital. These incidents highlight a growing trend of traffic issues in the region.
In the Holiday Hills neighborhood, residents express increasing frustration over speeding and reckless driving that have resulted in accidents. Local resident Jeff Moore reported an incident in which his trailer was nearly totaled due to a reckless driver. He referenced previous occurrences in which vehicles overturned and crashed into residential properties, raising alarm about safety in the area.
Community leaders have recognized the speeding concerns on Bordeaux Drive and are actively seeking solutions to enhance safety. Council member Jennifer Reynolds noted that while Bordeaux Road qualified for the installation of speed tables, the majority of homeowners did not vote in favor of this proposal. Reynolds committed to collaborating with traffic engineering to explore alternative methods to address speeding concerns.
Additionally, a separate accident involving an SUV and a garbage truck on Harrodsburg Road resulted in the SUV overturning. The driver required extraction from the vehicle but sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the garbage truck, which is not associated with the city of Lexington, was reported to be unharmed. Outbound traffic on Harrodsburg Road has since been reduced to one lane as crews work to clear the scene.
As traffic incidents continue to pose serious challenges to safety in Lexington and Richmond, local authorities and community members remain focused on developing effective strategies to reduce occurrences and improve road safety for all residents.
